Why I Picked Up This Book

I finally decided to listen to A Man Called Ove on Audible after it sat in my account for far too long. From the moment I started, I was captivated by Fredrik Backman’s engaging writing style and the unforgettable, humorously grumpy character named Ove. If you haven’t experienced this story yet, you’re in for a treat!

The Setting and Main Character

Set in Sweden, the story revolves around Ove (pronounced ‘Oo-veh’). At first glance, Ove appears to be a grumpy, difficult, opinionated, and stubborn old man who struggles to understand modern society. However, as the narrative unfolds, you discover a deeply hidden, wonderful side of Ove.

A Brief Overview of the Story

Ove’s journey is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming. He loses his mother at a young age, and his father, who teaches him everything from fixing cars to cooking, passes away when Ove is just 16. Ove inherits his father’s job and becomes somewhat of a hermit, withdrawing from others after a series of personal tragedies, including his house burning down.

Then, Ove meets Sonja on a train—a woman who becomes the love of his life. They move into a row home together, but tragedy strikes again when Sonja passes away. Left alone and jobless, Ove contemplates suicide, believing there’s nothing left to live for without Sonja.

The story takes a turn when new neighbors move in, sparking a series of events that bring Ove out of his shell. This is where the book truly begins to shine. I won’t spoil the details for you, but let’s just say it’s an emotional rollercoaster you won’t want to miss.

The Complex Character of Ove

Initially, Ove seems bitter, unhappy, and mean. However, as his neighbors start interacting with him, Ove slowly emerges from his grief. He becomes a cherished member of the community, revealing his big heart and incredible capacity for love and kindness. Through these interactions, you see that Ove is an amazing person hidden beneath a gruff exterior.

What I Love About This Book

  1. Humor in Serious Situations: One of the best aspects of A Man Called Ove is its ability to turn serious situations into moments of humor. For instance, Ove’s suicide attempts end up being hilariously thwarted, offering comic relief while pulling at your heartstrings. I found myself laughing and crying throughout the story.
  2. Depth of Characters: Fredrik Backman does a fantastic job of developing his characters, especially Ove. The more you learn about Ove, the more you grow to love him. His journey from grief to acceptance is beautifully portrayed.

Lessons Learned from the Book

  1. Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover: Ove might seem mean and grumpy on the outside, but he has a kind and caring heart. His actions speak louder than words, teaching us not to make snap judgments about others.
  2. Look Beyond the Surface: People may appear fine on the outside, but they could be crying out for attention and love inside. It’s essential to look deeper and sense the emotions that others might be hiding.
